The Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) did on the 2nd of May,2025 for the first time visit Chief Ndungu’s Chiefdom in Zambezi District, marking a significant milestone in the provision of equitable healthcare access to remote areas of the Country. The visit was met with deep appreciation from Senior Chief Ndungu, who extended his gratitude to the New Dawn Government under the leadership of Mr. Hakainde Hichilema ,President of the Republic of Zambia for prioritizing the well-being of people in even the most geographically isolated communities.
The Senior Chief commended the efforts of the ZFDS medical team, recognizing the services they brought. He expressed strong support for continued outreach programs but also highlighted key challenges, including impassable roads due to flooding and sandy terrain which rendered several health facilities, particularly on the western bank inaccessible.
In light of these challenges, Senior Chief Ndungu indicated that with the ZFDS helicopter more medical evacuations — particularly for pregnant women will be enhanced in order to curb the increasing risk of maternal deaths caused by delayed access to healthcare during flood seasons.
“Many are cut off from essential services including health” said the Chief.
ZFDS remains committed to serving Zambia’s most underserved populations and stands ready to expand its operations in partnership with both local leadership and the Government. The visit to Chief Ndungu’s Chiefdom is a testament to this commitment and a call for continued support in transforming rural healthcare delivery.
