A Zambia Flying Doctor Service team during the outreach has identified a rare medical condition in a three day old baby girl in Ngabwe. The baby was born with a lingual thyroid, a condition where the thyroid gland remains at the back of the tongue instead of migrating to the neck.
The condition was discovered after the newborn experienced difficulties in sucking . Upon examination, Dr. Kelly Makonko who is the surgeon on the team observed a growth at the back of her tongue, making feeding challenging. The baby is currently being fed through a syringe while medical teams focus on improving her weight.
For further specialized care, the infant has been referred to Kabwe General Hospital, where pediatric surgeons will conduct a detailed assessment and determine the best course of treatment.
The ZFDS a statutory body under the Ministry of health remains committed to providing life saving healthcare to rural communities and ensuring timely medical interventions for complex conditions.
