The orthopedic surgical camp at Ng’anga Bilonda Hospital is being hailed as a model for rural healthcare, directly aligning with the Ministry of Health's (MOH) vision of bringing quality care as close to the family as possible.
The successful initiative by the Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS), has been praised for significantly reducing the financial and emotional strain on patients in Luapula Province.
Mwansabombwe District Director Health Director (DHD) , Dr. Abraham Bupe, commended the effort during a courtesy visit from Ng’anga Bilonda’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Tendai Mweemba who presented the visiting Orthopedic surgeons at DHDs office .
"This is exactly what the Ministry Of Health (MOH) means when it says 'providing quality health care as close to the family as possible," Dr. Bupe stated.
"What ZFDS has done here directly contributes to improving the socio-economic well-being of families.
It brings services to the doorstep and reduces the financial and emotional burden of referrals."
The week-long camp, led by orthopedic surgeons Dr. Brian Malawo and Dr. Emmanuel Kanswe, was the first of its kind for the hospital.
Of the 20 patients scheduled, seven received successful surgeries. The remaining patients are awaiting critical orthopedic implants, which have been identified as a key challenge.
Dr. Bupe noted that patients who receive care locally, close to their families, not only recover better but also reintegrate faster into their communities, boosting national productivity.
He also highlighted the camp’s role as an eye-opener for the district's trauma care planning, especially given the rising number of injuries from motorcycle accidents.
"Motorbike accidents have become a nightmare for us. This camp has been an eye-opener," he said.
"We now need to invest in training, strengthen trauma response systems, and work with communities to raise awareness on road safety."
The success of the camp has positioned Ng’anga Bilonda Hospital as a potential rural surgical hub.
The hospital plans to hold more specialized camps and acquire orthopedic implants in advance to meet the overwhelming demand.
