A 14-year-old boy is in stable condition and recovering at Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) Ng'anga Bilonda Hospital after undergoing emergency surgery in a suspected case of splenic rupture secondary to trauma which was sustained in a bicycle accident.
The patient was initially referred from Mbereshi Mission Hospital with signs of internal bleeding.
Upon arrival at Ng’anga Bilonda Hospital, an ultrasound confirmed a large amount of fluid accumulation in the abdomen, indicating internal bleeding. The boy was rushed to the operating theatre for an emergency laparotomy.
The surgery, led by Dr. Christian Mutombo, began at 10:43 PM and concluded at 11:30 PM.
The surgical team discovered a severe laceration on the boy's spleen, which had caused him to lose approximately 1,200 milliliters of blood.
Due to extensive damage, the team performed a splenectomy—the removal of the spleen—to stop the life-threatening bleeding.
The operation was successful, and the patient is now recovering well. The surgical team included Assistant Linda Moonga, theatre nurse Yvette Salangeta, anesthetist Chabu Chisunka, and runner Jane Mumba.
