A 68-year-old woman from Kazembe Village in Mwansabombwe District has undergone critical diagnostic surgery at the Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) Ng'anga Bilonda Hospital.
Dr. Christian Mutombo, a General Medical Doctor with the hospital's surgical department, led the complex procedure.
The patient had endured debilitating abdominal pain and distension for over two years, a stark reminder of the challenges many face in accessing timely medical care in rural areas.
Before the surgery, doctors addressed severe anemia caused by the tumor to ensure the patient was strong enough for the operation.
During the procedure, doctors successfully performed a biopsy and obtained a sample from the immense growth, estimated to measure an astonishing 30 by 24 centimeters.
This crucial step will allow for histopathology to determine the exact nature of the tumor, which is suspected to have originated from the kidney.
Dr. Mutombo confirmed that once the pathology results are received, a specialist consultant surgeon from the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) will review the patient's case and guide on further management.
This vital follow-up is scheduled during an upcoming surgical camp next month, highlighting collaborative efforts to provide comprehensive care in rural areas.
Following the initial procedure, Dr. Mutombo expressed significant concern over the increasing number of patients who only seek medical attention when their illnesses are in advanced stages.
He emphasized that this trend places a heavy burden on the healthcare system and passionately urged the public to prioritize routine check-ups and seek medical help early, even when symptoms appear minor.
The surgical team included Assistant Surgeon Dr. Malama, Anesthetist Mr. Bupe Musenge, Assistant Anesthetist Ms. Yvette Salangeta, Nurse Sister Mary Zyambo, and Runner/Potter Sister Phebby.
Ng'anga Bilonda Hospital continues its vital mission, providing free specialized services to communities across Luapula Province, improving access to quality healthcare for those who need it most. Each month the ZFDS conducts surgical camp at the Ng’anga Bilonda Hospital for continued health care.
