A 44-year-old woman has undergone a life-saving emergency operation at Namwala District Hospital after she developed severe complications related to uncontrolled diabetes.
The patient, who was referred from Itezhi-tezhi District, had a history of poor compliance with her treatment and was admitted to the hospital in septic shock.
The woman's condition worsened after a wound on her left leg, which first appeared in November, became severely infected and began producing a foul odor.
The critical case was discovered during ward rounds by specialist surgeon Dr. Seke Kazuma, a consultant from Ndola Teaching Hospital on outreach with the Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS).
He immediately initiated treatment with fluids, insulin, and antibiotics before recommending an emergency procedure.Under general anesthesia, the woman underwent a one-hour operation during which her left leg was amputated above the knee to prevent the infection from spreading. It was her second amputation.
Before the surgery, the patient received counseling and Namwala District Health Director.
The surgeon has confirmed the woman is recovering well following the intervention.
We call upon different stakeholders to come on board and help with donations of various items like wheel Chairs that can be given for free to fellow Zambians that need them as we purse the Governments and the Ministry of Health’s’ mission for universal health coverage for all.
