Consultant surgeon and oncologist part of the ZFDS medical team, Dr. Seke Kazuma successfully performed 14 surgeries in a single day at Namwala District Hospital on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, as part of a specialist outreach program for Zambia Flying Doctor service (ZFDS) and Zambia Air Force (ZAF) .
Dr. Kazuma was assisted by the hospital’s Senior Medical Superintendent, Dr. Daniel Kabamba, along with theatre staff Mbaita Kanyungulu, Petronella Chibowa, Peter Sakala, and theatre porter Mulimo Bubala.
Hospital records show that 16 patients were screened, resulting in one emergency procedure and 13 scheduled surgeries.
The emergency was a caesarean section due to fetal distress. Both the mother and baby are in good condition, and the baby received an excellent Apgar score of 9 out of 10.
The scheduled cases included a variety of procedures, such as:
* The removal of a uterus for a 46-year-old mother of two with multiple fibroids.
* The repair of hernias in both children and adults.
* Four operations to drain fluid from testicles.
* The removal of two fatty lumps.
* The removal of a cyst from a child's ear.
* A procedure to properly set a broken arm for a five-year-old girl.
* The removal of extra fingers or toes from a nine-month-old baby.
Senior Medical Superintendent Dr. Kabamba praised the initiative, highlighting the transfer of skills to local staff.
He stated that the surgical camp ensures rural patients can receive specialized care without the financial burden of traveling for referrals.
