The Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) has successfully evacuated 39-year-old, a mining accident victim, from Mpika to Lusaka for urgent specialized medical attention.
The aeromedical exercise conducted on August 15, 2025, highlights the critical role of the Service in providing rapid medical transport for patients in remote areas.
The victim sustained severe injuries in a mining accident on August 10, including impacted hip joints.
Doctors at the Michael Chilufya Sata General Hospital in Mpika determined that his condition required immediate and advanced care, which was only available at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka.
The evacuation was initiated after Dr. Kambwili Jethro, Senior Resident Medical Officer at the Mpika hospital, submitted a formal request to the Ministry of Health to authorize ZFDS to airlift the patient.
A ZFDS aircraft departed Ndola at 7:32 hours, arriving in Mpika at 8:52 hours.
Following the careful loading of the patient ,the flight took off at 9:25 hours and landed at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport - Zambia Air force base in Lusaka at 11:25 hours, where an ambulance was waiting to transport him to the hospital.
We continue to ensure actualization of our mandate in health care delivery.we wish the patient a speedy recovery.
