The Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) has brought life-changing eye care to remote communities in Mwansabombwe District, Luapula Province, with a week-long surgical camp at Ng’anga Bilonda Hospital.
Among the beneficiaries is 19-year-old male patient from Mutwame Village, who, after years of deteriorating vision, has had his sight restored through cataract surgery.
His story is one of resilience.
The eldest of seven, he and his brothers all suffer from a rare genetic condition causing developmental cataracts.
Although his childhood was normal, his vision problems began in fourth grade, forcing him to abandon his education.
Thanks to the ZFDS outreach currently underway , he can now look forward to returning to school and pursuing his dreams.
This outreach, held in partnership with Eye Care for Zambia,a charity organization from the United Kindom (UK) has marked a milestone for Mwansabombwe.
In the last 4, the ZFDS team successfully performed 39 cataract surgeries— a first for the district.
The community has shown an overwhelming response, with hundreds turning up for specialized health services including eye screening, general surgeries, obstetrics, gynecology, and other essential care.
“This program aims to serve over 2,000 people, and the response has been incredible,” said Dr. Mulenga Chilabwe, ZFDS Chief Medical Officer.
“This is the first outreach at Ng'anga Bilonda Hospital, and we’re here to address a pressing need.”
Leading the specialized care team are renowned eye specialists Dr. Ramesh (diabetic retina) and Dr. Faye and Dr. Charlotte (oculoplastics), who have joined from the United Kingdom to tackle eye health issues prevalent in rural Luapula Province.
Pastor Simon Nkole, Trustee of Eye Care for Zambia, noted, “Eye conditions are particularly common in this region. By bringing these services directly to rural areas, we’re able to provide much-needed relief and hope.”
The ZFDS team remains committed to reaching the most underserved communities, and through initiatives like this.
