The Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) has airlifted a 22-year-old new mother, critically injured in a road traffic accident, from Mongu to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka.
She requires specialized neurosurgical care for a severe head injury.
The patient was pregnant at the time of the accident in Kaoma and initially received treatment.
There, her labor was successfully induced, leading to a safe delivery for both mother and baby.
Following the delivery, she was transferred to Lewanika General Hospital in Mongu in critical condition.
Dr. Samutumwa Njekwa, Medical Superintendent at Lewanika General Hospital formally requested for ZFDS air ambulance through the Ministry of Health (MOH) for swift evacuation to UTH.
The Service rapidly responded, with their air ambulance (registration 9J-AGC) departing Ndola at 09:11 Hours and landing in Mongu at 11:22 Hours.
After picking the patient, the ZFDS aircraft departed Mongu and arrived at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport - ZAF in Lusaka at 14:21 hours.
An ambulance from UTH was on standby to transport her for continued specialized care.
Wishing the patient a quick recovery.
