The Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) today 11th September ,2025 has conducted a successful medical evacuation, airlifting a critically ill patient from Mufulira to Lusaka for urgent specialized treatment.
The patient, a beneficiary of the Workers’ Compensation Fund Control Board (WCFCB), was suffering from Stage 3 pneumoconiosis, a severe lung disease, complicated by acute lung fibrosis.
Their condition had worsened to the point of requiring continuous oxygen to manage severe respiratory distress.
Upon receiving a request from the WCFCB, ZFDS quickly mobilized its ground and air medical teams.
The operation began with the patient's transfer from Mufulira to the ZFDS Kenneth Kaunda Aeromedical Hospital in Ndola for stabilization.
After receiving initial care, the patient was taken to the ZFDS Headquarters at Zuze Air Force Base, where the aircraft was waiting.
The plane departed Ndola and landed safely in Lusaka, where an ambulance was on standby to transport the patient to the International Hospital of Zambia for further treatment.
