After four (4) agonizing years battling a debilitating enlarged spleen, a 35-year-old woman from Mwansabombwe has finally found a new lease on life, thanks to a successful two-hour surgical procedure conducted at Ng'anga Bilonda Hospital by Zambia Flying Doctor Service.
The life-saving operation was performed by a dedicated team of surgeons from the University Teaching Hospital flown in by the Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS).
The patient, whose identity has been withheld for privacy, had endured immense suffering since 2021.
Her condition, a painful consequence of recurrent malaria infections, led her on a frustrating journey through various hospitals in search of a permanent solution, all to no avail.
Her prolonged struggle cast a long shadow over her daily life, but that shadow began to lift yesterday.
The crucial splenectomy commenced promptly at 5 AM, with the ZFDS surgical team working meticulously.
Dr. Felix Michelo, a lead surgeon with the Zambia Flying Doctor Service, emerged from the operating theatre with a sense of triumph.
He described the intricate procedure as complex but ultimately successful, a testament to the team's skill and dedication.
"The procedure was intricate, but we are immensely pleased with the outcome," Dr. Michelo stated, his voice reflecting the gravity and success of the moment. "It has truly given this patient a new lease on life, freeing her from years of chronic illness."
Dr. Michelo also took the opportunity to underscore the critical importance of early detection and prompt treatment for enlarged spleens.
He issued a stern caution, emphasizing that if left unaddressed, the condition can escalate to severe complications, including various blood disorders and the potentially life-threatening rupture of the spleen.
The Ministry of Health continues to support the ZFDS in ensuring that specialized services are provided for all.
