The Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) has successfully carried out a dual-purpose air ambulance mission, combining a critical medical evacuation with the repatriation of two Workers’ Compensation beneficiaries, reaffirming its commitment to delivering timely and lifesaving air medical services across Zambia.
The mission began with the evacuation of a 21-year-old female patient with suspected Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma from Mansa General Hospital to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka for specialised assessment and advanced treatment. Upon arrival at the Zambia Air Force (ZAF) Base at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (KKIA), the patient was safely handed over to the UTH medical team for continued care.
On the return leg, ZFDS repatriated two Workers’ Compensation beneficiaries who had been discharged after treatment at the International Hospital of Zambia (Fairview Hospital) in Lusaka. The patients, a 36-year-old male recovering from paraplegia following a workplace accident and a 37-year-old male were flown to Livingstone to continue their recovery closer to their families and support systems.
The mission was conducted aboard aircraft 9J-FDS, piloted by Elvis Kite and Siphosami Zulu, with onboard medical care provided by Susan Banda and Beatrice Chikumbi.
This successful multi-leg operation highlights ZFDS’s continued dedication to improving access to specialised healthcare through efficient aeromedical evacuation and patient repatriation services, ensuring that patients receive the care they need while supporting their recovery closer to home.
