The Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) has taken transformative healthcare to Nakonde District, Muchinga Province.

The focus is on specialized surgical interventions and delivering primary healthcare services such as general consultation, eye care and dental services, laboratory tests, and pharmacy support.

Lead by General Surgeon Dr. Kelly Makonko, alongside Anaesthetist Mr. Maxwell Nabeene and Theatre Nurse Sister Faith Mwambazi, the ZFDS surgical team has performed life-changing procedures at Nakonde District Hospital.

Among the conditions attended to is hydrocelectomy in a 12-year-old boy —a painful condition caused by fluid accumulation in the scrotal sac—for eight years.

The surgery provided him with permanent relief, ending years of pain and discomfort.
In another remarkable case involving a 16-year-old girl who had endured a large breast lump for over a year and she underwent successful surgery to remove it.

Both procedures exemplify the ZFDS’s commitment to addressing urgent healthcare needs in underserved areas.

During the medical outreach, ZFDS is not only addressing critical cases but also providing mentorship to local medical staff, enhancing their skills and capacity to manage complex conditions.

This approach aligns with the Presidential Delivery Unit’s (PDU) mission to strengthen Zambia’s healthcare systems, reduce referral costs, and improve patient outcomes.
