A 57-year-old woman from Mbereshi Village in Mwansabombwe District of Luapula Province is recovering after being brought to the surgical monthly camp held at ZFDS Ng’anga Bilonda hospital, the specialists performed emergency surgery to address a severe medical condition that had been developing over six years.
The patient was rushed in as an emergency case, suffering from severe abdominal pain. Medical examination revealed a large ovarian cyst that had become infected and twisted, creating a life-threatening emergency.
The condition was further complicated by infected fallopian tubes and widespread pelvic infection caused by bacteria. The patient had been experiencing chronic abdominal pain for six years, during which time the untreated cyst had grown and become increasingly dangerous.
The specialist doctors being Dr. Musonda Mutale from Ndola Teaching Hospital and Dr. David Muwowo from Kitwe Central Hospital led the emergency surgical team as they were brought in by ZFDS for the surgical camp.Given the severity of the infection, the specialists determined that removing the uterus was necessary to save the patient's life.
The complex procedure was completed successfully, with all infected tissue removed. The patient's condition has stabilized and she is now recovering well from the extensive surgery.
After six years of chronic pain and a deteriorating condition, this woman from Mbereshi Village now has a chance at a healthy, pain-free life. The emergency intervention by specialists prevented what could have become a fatal case, demonstrating the critical importance of having advanced surgical capabilities available in Luapula Province's remote areas.
The ZFDS continues to enhance health service delivery through the Government of the Republic of Zambia and the Ministry of Health by collaborating with different partners like Surgical society of Zambia, Ndola Teaching Hospital & Kitwe Teaching Hospitals for specialists to ensure Universal Healthcare is accessed by all.
