A Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) medical team stationed at Maamba General Hospital in Sinazongwe District has successfully saved the life of a 40-year-old pregnant woman from Singwinda area, who was admitted as an emergency case suffering from placenta previa, a life-threatening pregnancy complication.

The woman, carrying her sixth preganancy, was referred from Sinazongwe Rural Health Centre to Maamba General Hospital due to heavy bleeding.

Her condition was linked to her high number of previous pregnancies, a known risk factor for such complications.

At 08:17 hours, a skilled medical team led by Obstetrician and Gynecologist Dr. Kamukwanda Mwale, assisted by Dr. Mutinta Mwanandu, Anesthetist Mr. Morden Kalonga, and Scrub Nurse Sr. Milimo Muleya, performed an emergency cesarean section to save the mother and baby.

At 08:19 hours, the team delivered a healthy male infant weighing 2.915 kilograms.

Additionally, at the patient’s request and with her consent, a Bilateral Tubal Ligation (BTL) was performed during the procedure to prevent future pregnancies and reduce the risk of further complications.

By 08:48 hours, the surgery was successfully completed, and both mother and baby were stable.

Placenta previa occurs when the placenta is abnormally positioned near or over the cervix, leading to severe bleeding during pregnancy or delivery. This condition poses significant risks to both the mother and infant, requiring timely medical intervention to prevent fatalities.
