Three patients with long-standing orthopedic issues have received life-changing surgeries today at Ng’anga Bilonda Hospital.
These procedures are part of an ongoing Orthopedic Surgical Camp, a joint initiative by the Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) and specialist surgeons from the University Teaching Hospital (UTH).
Dr. Brian Malao, Head of Orthopedic and Trauma Surgery at UTH, and Dr. Emmanuel Kanswe, an orthopedic surgeon, led the operations.
A 24-year-old accident victim underwent a complex, two-hour procedure to remove an infected metal plate, clean his bone, and remove damaged tissue from a severe leg injury that had persisted for three years. He will begin rehabilitation in six weeks.
The second surgery helped a 17-year-old Grade 6 pupil who fractured his fibula when a tree branch fell on his leg. His fracture was realigned and stabilized with a cast.
Finally, a 20-year-old man had an open reduction surgery for a right thumb dislocation that occurred three weeks ago, with a K-wire inserted to maintain alignment. He's scheduled for four weeks of rehabilitation.
The orthopedic surgical camp, running from July 28 to August 1, 2025, exemplifies government efforts to bring specialized medical services closer to rural communities.
