Surgeons deployed to Zimba, Southern Province, by the Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) have successfully performed a complex pancreatic operation at Zimba Mission Hospital.
The two-hour procedure was led by General Surgeon Dr. Siachaya, assisted by Dr. Miyambo and theatre staff.
The patient, who had been experiencing persistent abdominal pain, was diagnosed with a large fluid-filled cyst on the pancreas measuring approximately six by eight centimetres and containing nearly 1.6 litres of fluid.
Owing to the size of the cyst, the surgical team could not use the standard drainage technique. Instead, they performed a cystojejunostomy , a more advanced procedure that creates a direct connection between the cyst and the small intestine, allowing the fluid to drain safely and effectively.
The operation was completed without complications. The patient was breathing independently upon leaving the operating theatre and was transferred to the recovery ward in stable condition, where medical staff continue to monitor his progress closely.
The Ministry of Health, through the Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS), continues to provide medical services free of charge, ensuring increased access to quality healthcare and advancing the goal of universal health coverage for all citizens, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach communities.
