The Workers' Compensation Fund Control Board (WCFCB) engaged the Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) to undertake an emergency air evacuation for its beneficiary suffering from paraplegia resulting from a spinal injury.
Helicopter 9J-KDK was deployed to Luanshya to transport the patient to Fairview International Hospital of Zambia in Lusaka on Friday, 21 November 2025, in line with the existing medical services contract between the two institutions.
In a formal request addressed to the ZFDS Chief Executive Officer, WCFCB Director of Compliance and Compensation Services, Mr. Maybin Nkholomba, emphasized the urgency of transporting the patient from Luanshya to the International Hospital of Zambia in Lusaka for specialized medical attention.
Responding promptly to the request, ZFDS helicopter 9J-KDK was airborne at 08:25 hours and landed at Luanshya Police Grounds at 08:30 hours.
Paramedics swiftly loaded the patient before the aircraft departed for Lusaka at 09:26 hours.
The helicopter landed at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (ZAF Base) at 10:01 hours, where an ambulance from Fairview Hospital received the patient for onward transfer to the International Hospital of Zambia.
At ZFDS we ensure to do our part in achieving universal healthcare for all.
