The Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) successfully conducted an emergency medical evacuation of a 30-year-old woman, just two days postpartum, who developed life-threatening cardiac complications.
The patient was diagnosed with severe mitral stenosis,a critical narrowing of a heart valve that restricts blood flow, and a suspected left atrial thrombus, a potentially fatal blood clot within the heart.
Her condition was critical, marked by persistently low blood pressure despite ongoing medical intervention. The evacuation was requested by Dr. Kalombo Mwatu, Head of Emergency and Critical Care at Solwezi General Hospital, through the Ministry of Health. She was referred from Solwezi General Hospital to the National Heart Hospital in Lusaka for specialized cardiology care unavailable at the referring facility.
Despite her fragile state, the patient remained conscious and responsive. Oxygen therapy was initiated to support her breathing as the medical team urgently prepared her for evacuation.
ZFDS promptly coordinated the mission. Aircraft 9J-AGC, piloted by Siphosami Zulu with co-pilot Elvis Kite and paramedic Suzen Banda on board, departed Ndola at 08:36 and arrived in Solwezi at 09:37. After stabilisation and boarding, the aircraft departed at 10:34 and landed safely at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka at 12:05, where an ambulance was on standby to transfer the patient to the National Heart Hospital.
This mission underscores the critical importance of rapid response, coordination, and access to specialized healthcare, especially in life-threatening emergencies.
ZFDS remains committed to bridging the gap in emergency healthcare delivery, bringing hope and life-saving services to those in need.
