The Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) has today, 29th April 2026, successfully executed a critical air evacuation of three oxygen-dependent pensioners from Mufulira to Lusaka for specialized medical review.
The beneficiaries, all long-term pensioners under the Workers’ Compensation Fund Control Board (WCFCB), are living with Pneumoconiosis and required urgent transfer to the International Hospital of Zambia. Due to their dependence on oxygen and the fragile nature of their condition, road transport was deemed unsafe.
The mission was carried out aboard ZFDS aircraft 9J-AGC. In command were Captains Chanda Mumpangwe and Siposami Zulu, with in-flight medical care provided by Paramedics Susan Banda and Salifyanji Nachamba. The crew ensured continuous oxygen support and close monitoring throughout the flight.
The evacuation request was issued by WCFCB Director of Compliance and Compensation Services, Maybin Nkholomba, under the existing medical services arrangement for Fund beneficiaries.
Upon arrival, the patients were safely handed over to a receiving medical team at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport for onward transfer to the hospital.
In a related mission, ZFDS also repatriated a patient from Lusaka back to Mansa following discharge, ensuring a safe journey home with continued medical oversight.
This mission reinforces the ZFDS mandate delivering lifesaving specialist access to Zambia’s most vulnerable, regardless of geography.
