The Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) today successfully conducted an emergency medical evacuation of a 31-year-old truck driver involved in a road traffic accident along the Kapiri–Ndola Road following a collision with a bus.
The patient sustained multiple traumatic injuries, including facial fractures, destruction of the right eyeball, nasal bridge injuries, facial lacerations, and a mild head injury. Due to the severity of his condition, an urgent referral was made by Dr. Justor Banda, Senior Medical Superintendent at Ndola Teaching Hospital, to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) Adult Hospital in Lusaka for specialized maxillofacial surgical management.
Following coordination with the referring and receiving medical teams, ZFDS facilitated the emergency air evacuation, with the aircraft flown by Pilot Chanda Mumpangwe and Co-pilot Siphosami Zulu, alongside Paramedic Susan Banda and Bupe Musenge on board.
The aircraft departed Ndola at 17:50 hours and landed in Lusaka at 18:49 hours in a bid to ensure the patient received timely access to advanced specialist care.
ZFDS remains committed to providing lifesaving emergency medical evacuation services and bridging access to specialized healthcare across Zambia.
