A 45-year-old man with a life-threatening brain injury was successfully evacuated from Solwezi to Maina Soko Military Hospital for urgent neurosurgical intervention.
The Zambia Flying Doctor Service carried out the emergency evacuation on Thursday morning, 9th April 2026, ensuring the patient arrived in Lusaka within hours.
Medical scans revealed that the patient had an acute subdural haematoma, a critical condition involving a blood clot exerting pressure on the brain,requiring specialised surgical care not available at Solwezi General Hospital.
Dr. Joshua Chisanga, Senior Medical Superintendent at Solwezi General Hospital, promptly submitted an urgent request to the Ministry of Health Zambia for aeromedical evacuation.
The aircraft departed Ndola at 07:49 hours and arrived in Solwezi approximately one hour later to retrieve the patient.
Upon landing at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (ZAF Base), the patient was swiftly transferred by ambulance and a specialised medical team from Maina Soko Military Hospital was waiting for him for immediate emergency treatment.
