A 14-day-old baby born with Aphelia (Penile Agenesis) a rare congenital condition also known as penile agenesis, a condition in which the male reproductive organ does not develop and an eight-month-old child battling a congenital heart disease were among three critical patients evacuated this morning by the Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) from Chinsali General Hospital for specialized treatment.
The eight-month-old baby diagnosed with Down syndrome and a congenital heart condition has been struggling with feeding and swallowing difficulties, persistent vomiting, repeated choking episodes, and recurrent diarrhoea, resulting in severe weight loss and the need for advanced medical attention.
The third patient was a 60-year-old man living with chronic kidney disease, who has endured severe back pain and difficulty walking for over a year. Doctors suspect his illness may have affected and weakened his bones, requiring further assessment by a nephrologist.
The evacuation followed approval from the Ministry of Health after a request was made by the attending doctor, Dr. Chiluba Songiwe.
During the flight, the patients were cared for by ZFDS paramedics Sr. Susan Banda and Sr. Nelly Njamba, while the mission was piloted by Director Aviation Services Col.Lasford Manchisi and Captain Chanda Mumpangwe.
ZFDS continues to fulfill its mandate of connecting patients in remote areas to specialized healthcare services, ensuring that no life is left behind.
