A 71-year-old woman from Mumba Chala Community in Ngabwe has finally found relief after enduring an abdominal pelvic mass for six years. The tumor, which caused severe discomfort, urinary obstruction, and difficulty passing stool, had significantly impacted her quality of life.
Despite previous visits to health facilities, she seized the opportunity to seek expert medical attention upon the arrival of the Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) in the district.
After a thorough assessment by Dr. Lungowe Susiku, she was referred for an ultrasound and further management by Dr. Kelly Makonko, a general surgeon part of the ZFDS team. Dr. Makonko who was positioned at Mukubwe Mini Hospital, successfully performed an Omphorosalpingectomy to remove the 1.2kg mass.
The tumor, suspected to be cancerous, has been sent to Kabwe General Hospital for further investigations. This life-changing intervention underscores the importance of accessible specialist medical care in rural Zambia.
The ministry of Health continues ensure that health services are brought closer to the people as much as possible.
