An 80-year-old woman from Mbereshi, Luapula Province, who was involved in a road accident on July 27, 2025, underwent emergency orthopedic surgery last evening at ZFDS Ng'anga Bilonda Hospital.
Dr. Brian Malao, Head of Orthopedic and Trauma Surgery from the University Teaching Hospital (UTH), led the surgical team.
The operation, which began at 17:25 hours and lasted two hours, addressed a severe injury to the elderly woman's right leg, described as an open fracture with bone protruding.
The initial procedure focused on thoroughly cleaning the wound and removing damaged tissue to prevent infection.
A Plaster of Paris cast was then applied to stabilize the fractured bone and prevent further movement.
"Our immediate priority was to clean and stabilize the fracture," stated Dr. Malawo after the successful procedure. "We anticipate that in six weeks, once the surrounding soft tissue and skin have healed, we can assess for further steps."
The surgical team included Dr. Kanswe, also an orthopedic surgeon, Mr. Bupe Musenge, the anesthetist, and theater nurses Sr. Mary Zyambo and Eunice and porter canicious Malama.
The patient had been referred to ZFDS Ng'anga Bilonda Hospital from Mbereshi Mission Hospital following her accident.
