The Zambia Flying Doctor Service's Ng’anga Bikomd a hospital in Mwansabombwe Hospital, last night saved a young mother just three (3)weeks postpartum was rushed into emergency care in critical condition.
She presented with severe sepsis, acute anemia (Hb 7g/dL), and was in urgent need of life-saving care. Immediate resuscitation was initiated, including a blood transfusion, to stabilize her condition.
A skilled surgical team led by Dr. Christian Mutombo Lead Surgeon, assisted by Dr. Pethias Mwambazi, Ms. Chisunka and Ms. Yvette Anaesthetists, and Febby Mwambazi Scrub Nurse performed an emergency laparotomy lasting 1 hour and 40 minutes.
Surgical findings included 6 perforations in the terminal ileum multiple interloop abscesses1.5 liters of fecal contamination in the abdominal cavity.
The team immediately resected 60 cm of damaged bowel, repaired the distal end, created an ileostomy, and carried out a full abdominal washout and closure.
Thanks to the fast, coordinated response and expertise of the ZFDS team, the patient is now stable and recovering well.
